WICKET-KEEPER Ben Brown has been elected as Hampshire captain for the 2025 County Championship campaign.
The 36-year-old will take over the vacant position after former club captain James Vince stepped down after 10 years in charge.
Brown, who averaged 41 in the competition last season, will be looking to go one step further this year and lead the Rose and Crown to their first red-ball trophy in over 50 years.
“It’s an honour and I feel incredibly privileged to be elected as captain for the County Championship. Coming in and seeing the pictures of those who have done it before me, it feels surreal to be part of that history,” he said during an interview with the club.
“As a club, we’re desperate to win the Championship. James Vince has been a tremendous leader, and will continue to be in the Blast, and hopefully I can continue our winning mentality as we continue to push for the four-day title.”
Brown is no stranger to leadership, having captained Sussex in 78 matches before signing for Hampshire in 2022.
Vince will continue as Vitality Blast captain, but after signing a deal with the Pakistan Super League, he will be unavailable for the early part of the season.
Nick Gubbins will continue as captain for the Metro Bank One Day Cup, meaning Hampshire will have three different captains in a season for the first time in over 15 years.
Director of cricket Giles White is confident Brown can bring the club more red-ball success.
“We have been a competitive side in Championship cricket for some time now and have been fortunate to have a number of leaders in the group.
“Ben’s experience and qualities made him the outstanding candidate to lead the side and we are confident he has the credentials to guide the team as it evolves and pushes for silverware.”
The Rose and Crown will begin their County Championship campaign at home to Yorkshire on April 4th.
