Fortresses and Fragilities: The Championship Table Told Differently

THE EFL Championship is approaching it’s climax, and there is still a lot to play for at the top and bottom ends of the table.

But this had me wondering what the table would look like, if it was based on home and away results. I’m going to be looking at a number of different metrics to work out the biggest winners and losers., like the percentage of their actual points won as well as how many places they have gained/lost home or away.

This is how the current table looks in the Championship, now let’s look at how the home and away tables shape up and who the biggest winner and losers are!

TABLE BASED ON HOME RESULTS:

Here we can see the EFL Championship table based on results at home for every team and there is no change at the top with Coventry or the bottom with Sheffield Wednesday, who haven’t won at home all season to this point.

BIGGEST WINNER: WEST BROM

The Baggies have won 28 out of their 40 points at home, which is a staggering 70% of their points have been won at home and that lifts them from 21st in the official standings to 12th in the table based on results at home.

BIGGEST LOSER: DERBY

Derby County, who in the real table are pushing to get into the playoffs places just three points off seventh have seen their home form be the reason they aren’t sitting in those precious spots.

They have won just 47.3% of their points at Pride Park which puts them in 15th place in the home standings, seven places lower than their place in the actual table.

Other key things to look at is that Coventry have scored the most goals at their home stadium this season (40) and Sheffield Wednesday scoring the least with just ten goals scored.

Then looking at goals conceded, it’s Ipswich with the best defence at their home stadium, conceding just 13 goals whilst once more, it’s Sheffield Wednesday who find themselves with another ‘worst stat’, conceding the most at home (41).

TABLE BASED ON AWAY RESULTS:

In the EFL Championship table which is sorted by away results, we have a new leader in Middlesbrough who are top of the league but once again, it’s Sheffield Wednesday at the foot of the table.

BIGGEST WINNER: BLACKBURN

Rovers, who sit in 18th place and are a team that many tip to go down this season, have the best away record relative to how many points they have in the official standings.

Out of their 42 points they have amassed through 38 games, 57,1% of that tally was recorded away from home, making them the biggest winner in the away table.

BIGGEST LOSER: SWANSEA

The Welsh-outfit have the third worst away record in the league, and that drops them eleven places away from their actual position in the EFL Championship.

Just 32.7% of their points in the Championship have been recorded in games away from home which is something that needs to be fixed if they are serious about making the playoffs, which is a possibility, with The Swans being just eight points away.

Looking at the other key stats, Sheffield Wednesday once again, have scored the least goals away from home (13), whilst Coventry keep their name at the top, with 38 goals scored, the most in the league.

Shifting our focus to goals conceded, there’s no surprise it’s Sheffield Wednesday with the most goals conceded and it’s Stoke City who surprisingly have conceded the least amount of goals away from home, with 19.

Almost all of the teams have eight games to go (bar Portsmouth and Ipswich) there is still a lot to play for at both ends of the table in the subjective ‘best league in the world!’
