Marie-Louise Eta has broken yet another glass ceiling in European football: Union Berlin has appointed her as head coach of the men’s first team, making her the first woman to lead a club in one of Europe’s top five leagues as head coach.
The announcement comes following the sacking of Steffen Baumgart, who was dismissed after a 3-1 defeat to bottom-of-the-table Heidenheim, a result that left Union teetering on the brink of relegation.
The club has opted for a historic shift by entrusting the team’s helm to Eta for the final few matches of the season, with survival still at stake.
At 34, Eta not only becomes the first woman to be a head coach in the Bundesliga, but also a pioneer among Europe’s top leagues in taking on this role with a top-flight men’s team.
Her appointment is not merely a symbolic gesture: it comes at a time of intense competitive pressure, with the club’s immediate future at stake.
Eta already knows what it takes to blaze a trail.
In 2023, she became the first woman to join a Bundesliga coaching staff as an assistant, a step that has now culminated in her promotion to the top job. A former player for Turbine Potsdam, she won the Women’s Champions League in 2010 and claimed Bundesliga titles before embarking on her coaching career.
The club’s initial plan was for Eta to take charge of Union’s women’s team next summer, but the sporting crisis has brought the timeline forward.
The sporting management, led by Horst Heldt, has emphasised its confidence in the German coach and described the move as a commitment to both sporting success and the future.
