How one moment changed a life: Simon Purdon’s story

JUST over two weeks ago away on the Isle of Wight a life changing injury hit a player at Romsey Rugby Football Club.

Simon Purdon picked up the ball after his fellow teammate was tackled and ran into four incoming Ventnor Rugby Football club players.

This tackle led to Simon dislocating his spine and rupturing a disk in his neck; therefore forcing him to retire from rugby.

Since the injury, Simon has been limited with activities that he can do, however he is happy with how the recovery has gone.

Simon: “I’ve recovered pretty well to be honest, I thought it would be sorer for longer.”

One foundation that has been of great help towards Simon and many more players that have been forced to stop playing the sport that they love is the is the Rugby Football Union (RFU) Injured Players Foundation (IPF).

The IPF is a foundation that is there to support players with catastrophic spinal injuries. The foundation helps players from grassroots level all the way up to professional.

The IPF funds research into the outcomes of these injuries and into finding the best ways to prevent and respond to these injured when and if they happen.

The chair of trusties Evan Davies said: “It’s there to care for any person who has a life changing injury as a result in the game of rugby.”
