ROYAL Shrovetide Football returned to Ashbourne this week, an ancient football game believed to date back to 1667.
The Up’Ards won 3-0 vs. the Down’Ards across two days of action with play ending on Ash Wednesday.
The teams made up of hundreds of locals braved a yellow weather warning for snow across Derbyshire, in a bid to score a goal at either end of the three-mile long pitch.
However, Royal Shrovetide Football isn’t the only sport that originates in Ashbourne.
The Derbyshire town is also the birthplace of… Toe Wrestling.
The Ashbourne Amateur Open marked the first tournament of the sport’s new era under TWF Sports.
Commonly described as ‘an arm wrestle of the toes’, the event set out to uncover the next toe wrestling talent, with four-time Toe Wrestling champion Ben Woodruffe in attendance.
Solent Sports News’, Chloe Boyne, travelled up to Ashbourne to find out more about the sport.
