Julen Lopetegui’s West Ham defeat Newcastle away from home

Julen Lopetegui

Lopetegui has come under a lot of criticism after his disappointing start to life at West Ham, he will be hoping last night’s 2-0 win will be the turning point for him.

His side’s performances and results have left fans doubting his appointment, suggesting he should be sacked a third of the way into the campaign.

Tomáš Souček opened the scoring for the Hammers in just ten minutes with a well directed header from a corner.

A rather scrappy game, but good spells of football from the East London club gave them the advantage over a surprised Newcastle.

Now, maybe the West Ham fans who were calling for Lopetegui’s head are willing to give him a second chance after the improved result and performance.

Before the game, his side had played 13 games, winning four and losing six sitting just two points from the relegation zone.

Of course, many expected a transitional period since bringing in nine new signings over the summer along with the new coach.

One of the better bits of business for West Ham was the signing of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Manchester United for 16 million, who was out of favour for the Red Devils, and he is rapidly becoming a fan favourite for the London side.

The right back scored his first goal for West Ham last night, making it 2-0, securing all three points in their crucial win.

The positive result will gives fans a bit more faith in Julen Lopetegui, but a busy December for West Ham will be the deciding factor in his future.
