Ahead of this weekends mighty clash between Stoke and Southampton let’s take a look at some players to have played in both iterations of red and white.
1. Peter Crouch.
‘Two metre Peter’ scored a combined 58 goals across 252 appearances for both the Saints and the Potters.
Crouch, who holds the record for the amount of headed goals in the Premier League, spent the 04/05 season on the south coast making a name for himself as an affective number nine.
But it’s a spell 183 miles north for which he is best known. Crouch spent eight years in Staffordshire where he played a ‘huge’ (no pun intended) part of Tony Pulis’ iconic Stoke team of the 2010’s.
2. Rory Delap.
At two, its another member of Pulis’ ‘streets will never forget’ Stoke team, Mr throw-in himself Rory Delap.
Delap spent five years at Saints, followed by a year at Sunderland, he then joined Stoke City on an initial loan deal that was made permanent before his retirement in 2013.
Delap was of course famous for those long throw ins which became such a weapon for Stoke across the best part of a decade.
With the trends of today, you’d think if Delap was still around, would the big clubs come calling?
3. James Beattie
Its the third and final member of Pulis’ lads at 3.
James Beattie made his name at St Mary’s scoring 68 in over 200 appearances, before winding his career at the Britannia.
Beattie also played for Blackburn Rovers, Everton and Sheffield United- he also earned five caps for England.
4. Graham Potter
Although far better known for his antics in the dugout, Graham Potter played for both Stoke and Southampton between 1993-1997.
In his somewhat forgettable playing career the former Chelsea and West Ham manager operated as a left back.
Potter is the current manager of the Swedish national team.
5. Danny Higginbotham
Finally, it’s Danny Higginbotham
The Gibraltar international played for Saints and Stoke for a combined six years, making 139 appearances in the process
The versatile defender joined the Potters from Southampton whilst both teams played in the championship.
Higginbotham now regularly appears on Sky Sports as an EFL pundit
