Winchester City goalkeeper scores last minute equaliser

WINCHESTER City’s Luke Cairney scored for Winchester City tonight in the 90+6th minute of a league game to make it 1-1 against Poole Town.

The goal came from a penalty after winger Trevor Caborn was taken down in the box and the referee pointed to the spot.

Normally, a goalkeeper wouldn’t be on penalties, especially when their team is 1-0 down in additional time, but Cairney had already agreed with his teammates and manager, Craig Davis, that he would take their next spot kick after the team hadn’t converted the last few.

The penalty was taken with composure though, the Winchester keeper hit it hard and low and its pure power beat Pooles Cam Plain who got a hand to it but the ball spun over the line.

After scoring, Cairney ran to the corner and was quickly followed by his teammates, but what makes this goal even more special is the fact he was previously the keeper for Poole Town, the team he had just scored against.

The goal means that Winchester City earn a well needed point in the Premier Division South which could help them in their fight for safety this season.

Winchester City manager Craig Davies put it simply in his post match interview saying it was “Cairney doing Cairney things.”

He went on to add “I already said Luke was going to be taking penalties for us, it’s not a disrespect thing.”

“We have been dreadful at penalties and he is the next cab off the rank. It wasn’t the greatest penalty in the world.”

“I don’t know what the other team were saying about the penalty, it just scrambled over the line but any penalty that goes over the line for us is a magnificent penalty because we have been terrible at them and I’m so pleased for Luke that he did it.”

“They’ve got some great supporters, Poole, and I’m sure they genuinely respect Luke for what he did when he was there but they were obviously going to hammer him if he missed.”

“It would’ve been a tough night for him if he missed with the stick he would’ve gotten.”

It was the first penalty the shot stopper has taken this season, but since he scored, Craig Davies and the Winchester City team shouldn’t have a problem with him taking their next spot kick, no matter how important it is.
