GOLF isn’t a sport known for loud and passionate fans, so it may come as a surprise to some to hear the PGA of America president say that US fans “Crossed the line” with their abuse on the weekend.
By day 2 Team Europe held a record 11½-4½ lead over the US and needed only 3 points to win. Naturally the US fans felt the need to push their side to an unlikely victory.
The normally calm Rory McIlroy was left visibly angry at several instances after chants of “Fuck off, Rory” were aimed at the Northern Irishman while he was preparing a shot. Homophobic chants as well as abused aimed at players wives in attendance was reported, in particular Erica McIlroy was hit by a beer cup.
Rory McIlroy was himself called a “Foul mouthed hypocrite” by former PGA of America president Paul Azinger, mainly in part because McIlroy abused the crowd back due to their inappropriate behavior.
