Transfer Watch: Romero to Madrid?

In recent days, links have emerged surrounding a potential transfer to LaLiga for current Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina defender, Cristian Romero.

The dogmatic defender has endured a tough time with injuries in recent seasons, and with the feeling at Tottenham right now being very much a negative one, it is no surprise he is being linked with a move elsewhere.

It would appear the most likely destination is Spain, with Spanish clubs queuing up to secure the Argentine’s signature.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Romero said this to Los Edul about his future:

“A league I would like to play in would be Spain to compete in all the major leagues in my career.

My focus is always on looking for new places to keep developing. We’re in the Europa League semi-finals, I wanna finish the season on a high note at Spurs. After that, we will see.”

Naturally, the Madrid teams have stormed in as front runners for the Spurs Defender, amongst a host of other clubs.

Real Madrid have had a torrid time with injuries to their backline this season, with Rudiger, Militao, Alaba and more, finding themselves sat on the sidelines for long stretches.

They also seem to have temporarily lost their winning mentality, and it is clear that changes need to be made to come back stronger next season. They need another Sergio Ramos, which Cristian Romero could perhaps come in the mould of.

A defender of Romero’s calibre would certainly improve the quality, stability and mentality of that inconsistent Real Madrid backline.

And in unexpected news (I am joking), Simeone’s Athletico Madrid have been linked heavily with Romero.

In my opinion this would be a perfect fit, not only due to Simeone and Romero being Argentine compatriots, but also due to Romero’s profile as a destroyer type centre back, ideal for Athletico’s aggressive and defensive-minded tactics.

Only time will tell, will we see Cristian Romero escape this woeful Tottenham Hotspur and set free into the Spanish sunset?

Let’s wait and see.
