Top versus Bottom in the Premier League

SOUTHAMPTON’S season has been wretched enough, and with eyes on this weekend’s 230 mile trip to top of the table Liverpool things could go from bad to worse to even worse.

Saints’ troubles are well documented, with four consecutive losses scoring just once, Sulemana’s consolation against Bournemouth.

The slight positive could be slightly boosted with 10 days of rest since their last match, a 4-0 defeat against Chelsea, whereas their opponents only returned from Paris yesterday.

The task seems impossible enough for Saints, but here’s some more stats to compound the misery anyway.

Liverpool have lost just one home match this season, a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in September, and Anfield has not been a happy hunting ground for Saints with their last league win being 4,185 days ago, when Tyler Dibling would have been just seven!

Notable History

The history books do not read kindly with Saints having lost more than double (64 times) than they have won (31).

The biggest win in this fixture comes courtesy of the 1998/99 season, and a thumping 7-1 victory for Liverpool. A Robbie Fowler hattrick would steal the headlines, with most of the memories being that of surprise that it never reached double digits.

Southampton’s crowning moment came 10 seasons before, with a 4-1 demolition job on the Red’s, with Rodney Wallace’s brace bringing Saints up to third for a brief moment. Liverpool would end that season as Champions despite leaving the Dell in October with their tails between their legs.

Bookies Odds

The Headline news is that Southampton are 16/1 to taste victory at Anfield with even long odds of 8/1 for a draw!

Rather unbelievably Southampton are just 100/1 to still avoid the drop, as a reminder they are 13 points from safety with 11 games to go!

Our favourite shout is the 5000/1 that is offered for Wellington to score first, and the match to end 3-3!
