The WORST Premier League team ever: Southampton or Derby County?

WITH Southampton seemingly destined for the drop from the Premier League, they are currently rivalling Derby County for the worst points tally in the league’s history, so let’s compare the clubs.

Manager:

At the helm of the Hampshire-based club this season there have been two names, with Russell Martin leading the club at the start of the season after promotion from the Championship before being sacked and replaced by Ivan Juric.

As for the Derby in the 2007/08 season, Billy Davies was the man in the hot seat, only lasting until November when he left the club, being replaced by former Wigan manager Paul Jewell. Jewell like Juric struggled to get the club going and saw out the rest of the season, with 32 games without a win.

Stats:

Goals have been hard to come by at St Mary’s this season, in Saints’ favour at least, scoring just 21 goals and conceding 70. With goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in net, they have kept just two clean sheets, whilst at the other end of the pitch the clubs top goal scorers are Joe Aribo and Paul Onauchu both on three goals.

As for Derby, they finished the season on just 20 goals scored with a staggering 89 conceded, a stat that Saints may match with just nine games left in the current campaign. In goal for the Rams was Roy Carroll, whilst the top scorer Kenny Miller netted one more than the current Southampton record, scoring four goals all season.

Losses:

The key stat that sent both teams down to the bottom of the league was the fact that they just kept losing, here is a head-to-head of how their season’s went:

Derby County 07/08Southampton 24/25 (Season not finished)

Can Juric’s Saints side pick up three more points in their final nine games or will they set a new and unwanted Premier League record?
