SOUTHAMPTON FC Women will travel to Fratton Park this weekend to face off against South Coast rivals, Portsmouth.
This is the first time the two teams will meet each other in the Women’s Championship after Portsmouth were promoted from the National League South.
There hasn’t been many meetings between the two sides, but Saints have won all of them since 2021 with an aggregate score of 7:2.
Southampton are chasing their goal of promotion to the Women’s Super League and this could be an easy win for the Saints if Portsmouth allows them to sail past them.
Portsmouth are looking to get their first win over their rivals for the first time in years to cement their debut season to the Women’s Championship.
Southampton have played 4 games so far in the League and have won two, lost one and then drew the other and they now sit in 5th in the table with seven points with Newcastle sitting closely behind them only separated by goal difference.
Portsmouth have played their first 5 games since their introduction to the second tier and they have lost all 5 and they have only scored once, so could they finally score their first Championship goal at home?
In the league so far, Portsmouth have had 32 shots, in comparison to Saints’ 33 shots and they have managed to only score once – away to London City Lionesses.
In only five games, Portsmouth’s defence have been caught asleep as they conceded 17 goals whereas Southampton has proven themselves as League winner contenders as they have only let two through the sticks.
If Portsmouth win they will grab their first Women’s Championship win but if Southampton grab the three points they will be on their way to be contenders for promotion.
