The Top 3 MOST iconic pets in sports history

Following the tragic passing of Lewis Hamilton’s dog Roscoe, here are the three most iconic pets in sport.

Honourable Mention: Roscoe

The inspiration for the post, Roscoe, gets an honourable mention for the list. Roscoe has been a regular at F1 events since his adoption in 2013.

Hamilton told The Sun that he was “overwhelmed” by the support and how many people were influenced by Roscoe, around the globe.

3. Llorente’s dog

Marcos Llorente’s dog might seem like a rogue pick, but he makes the list for one reason and one reason only.

His name, Anfield.

The reason I find this such an iconic pet is because he is named after Marcos Llorente’s second home.

Back in 2020, Llorente scored two goals at Anfield to put Atletico Madrid through to the Champions League quarter-final.

It was such an iconic game for Llorente; his dog was named after Liverpool’s stadium.

2. Pickles

This list would not of been complete without our national treasure, Pickles.

Pickles was a black and white collie dog who was very famous around the country back in 1966, for finding none other than the original World Cup trophy, the Jules Rimet trophy.

Four months before the 1966 World Cup kicked off, the trophy had been stolen, sending the football world into a frenzy.

He found the iconic trophy wrapped in newspaper near his owner’s home, and ascended into pet stardom.

Unfortunately, not all stories have a happy ending, with poor Pickles passing a year later due to being strangled on his choke chain that was caught on a branch.

A traumatic ending for a national treasure.

1. Mike Tyson’s Pigeons

Tyson’s iconic relationship with pigeons goes back a long way and is even the reason he started his iconic fight career.

In school, he was bullied, and due to the bully killing one of his beloved pigeons, he finally stood up for himself and fought back.

He credits this moment as to why his passion for boxing ignited and how his legendary career began.

Tyson is rumoured to have hundreds, if not thousands, of pigeons to his name in the US.

The fact that he considers pigeons as his first love means they have earned their place on this list.

I’m surprised that there is no movie about this love story for the ages.
