IN a new statement, The Football Association will be changing its policy on transgender players.
Following the Supreme Court’s ruling on April 16th, The FA has said today: “Transgender women will no longer be able to play women’s football in England, and this policy will be implemented from 1 June 2025.”
Earlier this month, five judges unanimously ruled that “the legal definition of a woman in the Equality Act 2010 does not include transgender women who hold gender recognition certificates (GRCs).”
The Guardian wrote after the decision: “The judgement could have far-reaching ramifications and lead to greater restrictions on the access for trans women to services and spaces reserved for women. It prompted calls for the UK’s laws on gender recognition to be rewritten.”
Sports Editor at JOE, Henry Hill, said on Twitter:
The Women’s Game, a women’s football podcast hosted by US Women’s National Team players Sam Mewis, Lynn Biyendolo and Becky Sauerbrunn, tweeted:
The FA also said: “This is a complex subject, and our position has always been that if there was a material change in law, science, or the operation of the policy in grassroots football then we would review it and change it if necessary.”
“We are contacting the registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue to stay involved in the game.”
