The Dilemma of UFC 300

Over the past few weeks UFC president Dana White has been dropping massive fight announcements for the marquee UFC 300 card scheduled for 13th April but who will main event.

The fight card has produced many mouth-watering clashes with nine current or former champions on the card over the course of eleven fights.

With the BMF Title fight between Justin Gaethje and Max Holloway being announced and the Women’s strawweight champion Zhang Weil defending her belt against her Chinese rival Yan Xiaonan being the pick of the fights.

However, the most important piece of the puzzle is still missing the main event with their still being no indication as to who will headline the marquee event.

There have been several rumours as to who will main event but still yet to be anything concrete with several champions unavailable to fight like Heavyweight champion Jon Jones who is out with an injury and Lightweight champion Islam Makhachev ruling himself out due to taking part in Ramadan around the fight date.

With the card less than three months away what are the most likely options to main event UFC 300.

Dricus Du Plessis Vs Israel Adesanya

The Newly reigned middleweight champion Du Plessis captured the gold in January in a closely contested split decision win over Sean Strickland. Setting up a potential defence of his gold against former champion Adesanya which is one of the fiercest rivals in MMA after the battle of words over who is the superior African with Du Plessis being from South Africa and Adesanya being from Nigeria. The fight was supposed to happen last year when Adesanya was Champion but it didn’t happen due to Dricus having an injury with the roles now reversing. White seemed interested in booking this as main event with the rivalry being there and both men carrying plenty of start power but the probability will depend on how quickly Dricus can heal up after his War with Strickland with the April date providing a quick turnaround for the Champion.

Conor McGregor Vs Michael Chandler

Whilst McGregor ruled himself out of UFC 300 last month announcing his long-awaited fight against Chandler would take place during international fight week on June 29th. This news was never actually confirmed by the UFC with everything McGregor says being taken with a pinch of salt. As just over the last couple days both fighters have been teasing about headlining the event over social media. Being the biggest star in the history of the sport the long-awaited return to the octagon after two and a half years would give the event the magnitude some fans are demanding

Alex Pereira VS Israel Adesanya

Light Heavyweight champion Perreira has quickly elevated himself to one of the biggest names in the sport during his short UFC tenure becoming a double champion. Being one of the few uninjured titleholders. Top Contender Jamal Hill won’t be ready as he is still recovering from an injury and Magomed Ankalaev won’t be seen as an attractive name by many. If the UFC wants Perreira on the card then a trilogy bout with Adesanya would excite fans massively as it is currently 1-1 with both men having knockouts over each other.

Tom Aspinall VS Alex Pereira

Interim heavyweight champion Aspinall is in a difficult position currently with Champion Jon Jones and Stipe Miocic seen to be avoiding to fight the Englishman. Whilst there is a real lack of other contenders in the division currently with them not deserving a shot at interim gold or already being booked for a fight. Aspinall revealed that Stipe was offered the fight at UFC 300 but declined the offer. With Tom ready to fight now there has been talk over a potential fight with Light Heavyweight Perreira who has been open to a heavyweight move and make history becoming the first three weight division champion in UFC history.

Leon Edwards VS Belal Muhammad

This would be a fight which will anger many MMA fans if it headlines the card due to both many not having the most exciting fighting styles in many fans eyes and lacking the star power to headline such a marquee card. However, though it is a solid fight and Welterweight champion Edwards is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters on the planet and Muhammad being a clear Number one contender after impressive recent wins. With both men being ready to fight this could be seen as a safe bet to headline the event.
