Southampton suffer frustrating goalless draw against Swansea City

SOUTHAMPTON continued their poor start to the season as they were held to a goalless draw against Swansea City.

The Saints racked up 3.10 expected goals (xG) compared to The Swans 0.20 expected goals, a monumental difference which portrays the one sided nature of the match.

The south coast side dominated the first half proceedings, as Leo Scienza hit the post and Cameron Archer missed two great chances to open the scoring.

Archer’s first decent chance of the game came in the 22nd minute, a right-footed curling shot that narrowly missed the top corner.

Only 10 minutes later Scienza struck the post as he cut in from the left flank, with the Brazilian’s attempt rebounding back out to Archer.

The English international was unable to fire his effort on target, as he skewed the ball into the crowd from eight yards out.

Southampton were unable to keep up the intensity of their first half display, as the final 45 minutes drew moans and groans from the crowd.

Saints manager Will Still turned to his bench in the 70th minute when he brought on Tom Fellows and Jay Robinson in an attempt to find a winning goal.

Both players had a positive impact upon entering the pitch, however it was Caspar Jander who spurned the best chance of the match in the 76th minute.

Adam Armstrong’s powerful low shot was spilled by Swansea keeper Lawrence Vigouroux, with the onrushing Jander poking the rebound goal wards.

With Vigouroux stranded on the ground the Saints midfielder has the entirety of the goal to aim for, however his effort rattled the inside of the post.

The German international had another empty net to aim at, but somehow evaded contact with the ball as it flashed across the face of goal.

Southampton will hope their fortunes change when they travel to 7th place Bristol City tonight, a game that feels like a must win for The Saints.
