Southampton Studio Steps Up: Ballroom Classes Put Fun Into Fitness

EVERY Saturday night, millions of people tune into BBC One to see celebs dance and be scored like this, but did you know that Ballroom & Latin dance has been recognised as an Olympic Sport?

DM Studios is a dance studio based in Northam just by St Mary’s Stadium and hosts a weekly Ballroom and Latin dance class to get locals moving.

Hayley Stevens is the owner of DM Studios and teaches a number of classes herself, from Zumba to the Cha Cha.

She has danced her entire life and believes that the classes they have on offer provide both exercise and a great social environment.

Stevens said: “It is brilliant for people’s minds and bodies because you’re having to remember the steps, recall information as well as move your body around the floor.”

“We pride ourselves on a community feel so people come every and week and all know each other; they hang out socially and we hold events. Anything to keep that interaction going with other people.

Research published on the website LesMills says that a good dance session can lift your heart rate and deliver a good cardio workout.

The classes are put into three groups: beginners, improvers and advanced, all with different teachers and spaces allowing dancers to get better and practice at the appropriate level.

Each week they learn two different dance styles, one from ballroom and one from latin with this week being the Tango and Cha Cha.

For those keen on getting back in shape, or even wanting to find a new community group, DM Studios has provided a safe and reliable place for those in the mood to move.
