Solent’s Women In Sport

To celebrate International Women’s Day this week, Solent Sports News spoke to Solent University students on what sports mean to them as women in sport.

Chloe Boyne throws punches and kicks in Southampton’s New Generation Martial Arts gym.

Despite only starting four months ago, Boyne has been climbing the ranks in the female owned gym.

“I wish I started this sooner, it is the best thing I’ve ever done,” said Boyne.

As the gym has helped the 23-year-old, “Toughen up” as she has, “Never been punched in the face before.”

Rochelle Barham started dancing at three-years-old, she has gone onto perform in all forms of dance.

From ballet to ballroom Barham has competed all over the country throughout her youth, before moving into cheerleading at the start of university.

“A dance studio is a home away from home,” claimed Barham.

Barham calls dance a “Release” and a way to “Let go”.

Gracie Hodan played in the Southampton and Portsmouth Women’s football academies as a youngster, and now plays for Solent’s first team.

Hodan says: “Football is a passion that I could no longer live without.

“It is where I met all of my friends, and I continue to play today.”
