Solent Netball 1st team prepare for a showdown against rivals University of Southampton

SOLENT Netball 1st team are gearing up for a big clash this Wednesday as they take on local rivals, the University of Southampton 1st team, in the Western Tier 2 BUCS league.

The team is looking to bounce back after a tough loss to Exeter 4s last week at the Solent Sports Complex. It was a tightly contested game, with both sides level going into the third quarter. However, Exeter stepped up their game in the final stages, pulling ahead to secure a 66–44 victory.

The final stages of the match exposed a clear divide in fitness levels between the two sides which ultimately influenced the result. Exeter’s players looked sharp and composed right to the final whistle, while Solent began to tire as the game wore on.

Exeter’s edge in fitness comes as little surprise. Their squad began pre-season training on August 26th, following a programme that included boxing, gym sessions, yoga, and regular on-court practice. In contrast, Solent entered the match having only had two training sessions, this difference in intensity reflected the endurance on display.

Despite the defeat, Solent remain positive. They’ve spent time reflecting on their performance, identifying key areas for improvement, and have put in the hard work on the training court to correct their mistakes.

University of Southampton also suffered defeat last week, falling 45–31 to the University of Bournemouth. With both sides still searching for their first win of the season, Wednesday’s clash carries added significance not just for points, but for local bragging rights in what promises to be a fiercely contested derby!
