Manchester United cruise to first Women’s Champions League quarterfinal

Women's football players stand on pitch for throw in.

MANCHESTER United have secured their spot in their first-ever Women’s Champions League quarterfinal after defeating Atletico Madrid 2-0 at Leigh (5-0 on aggregate).

Julia Zigiotti Olme opened the scoring, after sealing Manchester United’s win in the reverse fixture.

Moments before half-time, Jess Park scored a contender for goal of the tournament, beating Lola Gallardo from range with a stunning strike.

The Red Devils will face Bayern Munich for the first time in their history, with fellow Women’s Super League sides Arsenal and Chelsea set for a quarterfinal clash.

The competition’s defending champions Arsenal defeated OH Leuven 3-1 on Wednesday night (7-1 on aggregate), knocking out the Belgian Women’s Super League winners on their debut UWCL campaign.

Alessia Russo’s brace at a weather-hit Meadow Park extended her lead as top scorer in the tournament.

The Gunners will face London rivals Chelsea who continue to chase Manchester City in the Women’s Super League to defend their title.

Former England player, Fara Williams, praised the WSL’s representation in the competition with three sides qualifying for the Round of 16: “It shows the growth of the league and shows what can happen when you invest.

“It’s important to have those teams representing us as well as they do.”

The Women’s Champions League quarterfinal first-legs will take place on the 24th March on Disney+.
