James Wade is out at the second round of this years World Darts Championships after a 3-2 defeat to Canada’s Matt Campbell
The 13th seed appeared to ignore Campbell’s handshake at the climax of his second round defeat as well as walking off the stage imminently.
The Englishman has now been knocked out in the second round for two years running, and is the first seed to be knocked out of this years competition.
Speaking after the contest, Campbell labelled the win as ‘massive.’ It is only the Canadians second ever win at Alexandra palace, and his first ever time reaching round 3.
Despite his victory, Campbell insists he will still fly home to Canada tomorrow to spend time with his family.
It was a close encounter, which initially went the way of the seed, Wade holding his throw in order to take a 1-0 set lead.
However the Canadian fired back and after a close contested set, Campbell won it with a superb 14 dart leg.
Wade took the third set after an excellent 132 finish, pinning the bullseye to leave him one set away from round 3.
But Campbell was not done there, and won 3 consecutive legs in order to take the tie to a deciding set.
Campbell took the first two legs in the deciding set, to leave him just a leg away from a monumental victory, and the biggest shock so far at this years championships.
Wade bounced back as Campbell missed a dart for the match, but at his next opportunity pinned D18 for what will undoubtedly be the biggest win of the Canadian’s career.
