TONDA Eckert is on the verge of becoming Southampton’s next manager after an impressive four game run as interim.
Since the sacking of Will Still at the start of November, Saints are unbeaten under Eckert.
Under Still, Southampton only picked up 12 points in 13 games, something that Eckert has done in just four.
Even more impressively, the Interim manager has got the team scoring goals and has managed 13 goals, which is one goal more than Still got.
With this good run of form, could Eckert be the man for the job?
BBC South reporter Lewis Coombes said: “I think he’s certainly doing everything he possibly can to get that job, he hasn’t put a foot wrong.”
“To go from a team that hadn’t won many games to winning four on the bounce, it’s down to him.”
There are still doubts as to whether he should get the job, with Coombes saying: “The only downside is when he has any adversity, what would the reaction be?” “His inexperience may be tested if they lose two games on the bounce.”
Other fans are also pesemistic as to whether he should sign the contract after four games.
One fan said: “I don’t think we should employ him straight away, because that’s what other teams have done, like with Gary O’Neil, and as soon as you employ them, then it doesn’t work out. So keep him as he is, and if it all works out, then all good.”
Another fan said: “I think he’s built quite a good case for it, he’s turned things around at Southampton. I think he should get it, theres not much more you can do to get the job.”
It certainly feels as if Eckert is on his way to becoming Southampton’s next manager, and if this form continues, then Saints fans should be hopeful that he can be the one to steer them back to the promotion spots.
