American Football has seen major growth across the UK in recent years, with NFL games regularly staged at UK venues each year.
Research by the NFL suggests that there are an estimated 13-14 million fans of the sport in the UK, with rumours at one point suggesting that the LA Chargers could move their team to London.
The sport may be well known for its long throws and big tackles, but there are other roles in the sport that may go under the radar.
Each team has its own designated special team, consisting of players who are responsible for the kicking situations, such as the punting, field goals and the kick off.
Although these players are only called upon for brief periods during the game, the impact they have can be a major part to the outcome of the game.
Since 2018, over 25 percent of NFL games have been decided by a field goal, with Brandon Aubrey being one of the best in the game, having success from over 90% of his attempts.
Solent Redhawks kicker Harry Bundy is new to the role this season, and relishes the pressure he faces.
He said:
“That single moment comes down to you, there is a little less pressure on me as a kicker, there is a little less pressure on me, but it is still on me to get it in.”
Along with Bundy, Noah Eades also plays a huge part in the special teams success. Eades is the long snapper for the team, meaning he has the responsibility of throwing the ball behind him to set up his teammate Bundy for the field goal attempt.
Eades said:
“It is different to normally snapping the ball, it could make the difference between winning and losing the game.”
