Heartbreak for AFC Wimbledon Women as penalty shootout ends FA Cup run

A THRILLING FA Cup encounter ended in disappointment for the home side, as Wimbledon were knocked out despite a strong first-half performance.

Wimbledon dominated the opening period, with Daisy McLachlan calmly slotting in a well-placed assist from Alisha Buckingham. However, the match took a turn just before half-time when starting goalkeeper Rose Kite was forced off injured after colliding with the post while attempting to save a long-range strike from Chatham Town.

Goal keeper replacement, Lauren Allen, made a long-awaited return to action, her first appearance since May 5th, 2024, following time away due to pregnancy and an ankle injury.

Wimbledon came out determined to level the score, having two early chances called offside. When Rosie Russell was brought down in the box, a penalty was awarded. Ashlee Hinks stepped up but saw her effort denied by the post. However, Daisy McLachlan reacted quickly and converted the rebound, making it 2-2.

Wimbledon took the lead with a goal from captain Ashlee Hinks, who scored one-on-one with the keeper. However, just three minutes before extra time, Chatham equalised on a through ball.

The match went to penalties, where two Wimbledon players missed from the spot, allowing Chatham to win 4-2.

“It’s hard to take really cause when you look at the result, it’s not a 3/3 type of game especially for them to win overall. We dominated possession the whole way through.”
