Australia have won a record-extending sixth World Cup title, defeating hosts India by six wickets at the packed Narendra Modi Stadium.
A magnificent Travis Head century set the tone for Australia, who had slipped to 47-3 in their chase of 240 runs.
But a partnership of 192 between Head and Marnus Labuchagne settled the ship for the Aussies, steering them to victory.
Australia reached the target in 43 overs, snapping India’s 10-match winning streak in the tournament.
Captain Pat Cummins won the toss in the early hours of the morning, and elected to field first, to many surprises.
It was a decision that proved to be correct, as despite fifties from Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, and 47 from captain Rohit Sharma, India were held to 240 runs.
The Indians came out of the gate flying, picking up the early wickets of David Warner (caught Kohli b. Shami), Mitchell Marsh (caught Rahul, b. Bumrah), and Steve Smith (LBW b. Bumrah).
But Labushagnce and Head proved resilliant against the thumping Indian attack, setting course for victory.
Head was eventually dismissed by Mohammed Siraj, and with just two to win, Glenn Maxwell hit the ball down to fine-leg for two, and that was all she wrote.
Speaking to the media after the game, Head said: “What an amazing day.
“The way Mitch came out and took the game on set the tone. Great decision to bowl at the toss, Paid dividens.”
Australia will now hold the title until the next tournament in 2027 which is set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
