Are fans being priced out of football?

EVERY week thousands of die-hard football fans travel the country to show their love and support for their football clubs.

For thousands, the thought of spending your weekends travelling up and down the country watching and supporting your football team lights up their faces.

Unfortunately, football fans far and wide are being priced out of supporting their teams as a result of the greed of both football clubs and transport companies.

The average price of tickets for an away game in the Premier League or Championship is 30 pounds with some tickets reaching upwards of 45 pounds just to watch a game of football.

On top of purchasing the tickets, football fans then need to sort travel arrangements out as well, either in the form of coaches, trains or driving up yourselves.

Life long Southampton fan Leyton Hewlett has travelled 9,876 miles over the past three years watching Saints both home and away and has accumulated approximately £6000 in expenses whilst doing so.

Leyton said: “It’s the best way of following your team and doing the away games shows more dedication and loyalty.

“Transport is the big killer for these games. From here [in Southampton] to Blackburn it would have cost me over £100 to get the train and it was like £40 for the coach.”

This issue with fans being priced out of watching football isn’t just evident in the Premier League or the Championship as National League football fans are also massively affected.

Die-hard Torquay United fan Max Cochran is one of thousands of non-league football fans who are being priced out of following their football teams.

Max said: “The travel wise is the most expensive part of the day so I’m spending near on £40 to go to most of the away games at the moment.”

Football was once a game for the working class and is now only accessible for the middle class which is a sorry sight to see.
