AFC Wimbledon women suffer defeat to Cheltenham Town

AFC Wimbledon Women hosted Cheltenham Town on Sunday at the Tooting & Mitcham Stadium, hoping to turn around a difficult start to their season.

However, the Dons were left disappointed, falling to a 2-1 defeat in front of their home supporters.

Wimbledon have struggled to find form so far this campaign, with their only win in a 3-1 victory over Billericay Town. Despite showing flashes of promise, finishing in the final third has been issue for the team.

Daisy McLachlan offered a glimmer of hope with a superb equaliser on the hour mark, lifting the spirits of the home crowd. But Cheltenham responded quickly, reclaiming the lead and ultimately securing all three points.

The result leaves AFC Wimbledon Women sitting 10th in the league table, just two places above the bottom. With the season still in its early stages, the team will be looking to regroup and find form before their next game.

Goalscorer Daisy McLachlan reflected on her equaliser, describing what she saw in the moment and how she kept her cool under pressure.

“In the moment it was just to stay composed. I think I went to strike it and then decided to cut back in and cut back out and I just wanted to get it on target! Which is the most important thing to try and get us back into the game.”

Before the equaliser, there was a clear shift in momentum, with AFC Wimbledon showing real determination to fight their way back into the match and push for all three points.

“I think it was coming out in the second half. We knew that we could get one back, then obviously they got a goal straight after. But that gave us more momentum to try and come back.”
