Parkrun is a global movement that began in the UK and has since expanded worldwide. It’s a free, timed 5k event that takes place every Saturday morning at 9am.
The Southampton Parkrun is held at Southampton Common, one of the city’s most iconic green spaces. The 5k route is a combination of smooth paths and scenic trails, taking runners through parkland and woodland. The course itself is flat, making it ideal for newcomers, those looking to improve their times, or anyone just after a morning run in the fresh air.
This particular event is the 2nd biggest Parkrun in the country and is rapidly growing. This weekend had 1,229 participants which is the largest outside of the capital.
The best thing about Parkrun is that anyone can take part. From established marathon runners to people running for the first time, you will find a range of all ages and abilities. The main objective is just to have fun and not necessarily run the fastest time, whilst being in a supportive and non-competitive environment.
Here’s why you should join the Parkrun:
- It’s free to take part
- It’s enjoyable
- It can be rewarding
- Become part of the local community
To take part in the Parkrun, all you have to do is head to their website at https://www.parkrun.org.uk/register/?section=form&eventName=southampton&e=southampton and register for free. Once you have your barcode, you are all set to run on Saturday morning, or even volunteer!
