AFTER scoring his first penalty against Poole Town on Tuesday, Winchester City’s Luke Cairney has made it two in two as he scored in a 2-2 Draw with Hungerford Town in the league.
City had missed 11 penalties recently so to have the goalkeeper score the last two is a breath of fresh air for the southern premier division side.
Winchester found themselves two goals down inside the first half until defender Kieran Douglas scored just before the break.
It was in the 60th minute when Winchester’s tricky winger Trevor Caborn was taken down in the box and a penalty was given.
Like in their game against Poole, goalkeeper Luke Cairney made the long run up the pitch to take the penalty.
Cairney confidently placed the ball into the side netting, to the keepers right and sent him the wrong way.
What makes it even more special is that both his penalties against Poole and Hungerford came Against teams he previously played for.
After the match, Cairney said he would’ve preferred three points.
“I’m happy to score but obviously I would’ve been happier with three points, but it’s nice to contribute to the goals as well, two in two, we move on to Tuesday.”
Winchester manager Craig Davis was delighted with how the keeper took his spot kick.
“Against his old team again, I thought today’s penalty was great, for us to score two penalties in a row is remarkable let alone Luke, a goalkeeper doing it.
“Great penalty from Luke, I’m so pleased that he buried it for us”
Winchester City’s next match is away to Swindon Supermarine on Tuesday 15th October and Cairney could possibly make it three goals in three matches for a goalkeeper.
