Subway League Cup Final Preview: Chelsea v Manchester United

Tomorrow at a sold out Ashton Gate in Bristol at 2:15pm, Chelsea will face off against Manchester United in the Subway League Cup Final.

The London side defeated Women’s Super League leaders, Manchester City to proceed to this year’s final, whilst United put one goal past Arsenal which was enough to book their place in the final.

This year’s final will make it seven consecutive final appearances for the Blues, whilst this will be the Red Devils’ first time in the final.

Marc Skinner’s side will be looking to seek revenge against Chelsea, as just before the international break they lost 2-1 in extra time of the FA Cup Fifth Round.

However, Sonia Bompastor’s team will be looking to make it two wins in two knockout competitions in domestic football against Manchester United.

Both sides will be missing key players due to their commitment in the Asian Cup with their nations.

Manchester United will be without midfielder Hinata Miyazawa as she is still in the Asian Cup with Japan as they prepare for their quarter final tie.

Chelsea will be missing full back Ellie Carpenter and forward Sam Kerr as they have just booked their place in the semi-final with Australia.

Both sides will also be affected with injuries for this finals tie.

Chelsea are without their captain Millie Bright but also losing out on Niamh Charles, Nathalie Bjorn, Catarina Macario and Mayra Ramieriz as they have all been ruled out just before the weekend.

The Red Devils are missing Vice Captain Ella Toone as well as, Leah Galton, Anna Sandberg and Jayde Rivere who unforunately miss their club’s first League Cup final because of injury.

With both teams missing some key players, it could go in any team’s favour.

United sit second in the WSL table with 34 points yet Chelsea are chomping at their heels as they sit in third with 33 points.

Could we see United win their first League Cup in their first appearance in the final or could Chelsea add another trophy to their already impressive trophy cabinet and make it 4 finals victories in 7 appearances?

Come back tomorrow for the match report of the first trophy in the top flights of Women’s Football in England.
